展覧会について

　 スザンナ・ニーデラーは1958年バーゼル(スイス)に生まれ、1978−1983年にかけてバーゼル大学、メキシコーシティ大学、パリ VII大学で言語学や美術史、文学、映像理論、写真、現代美術などを学ぶ。学位取得後は、「欠如」「不在」「空虚」と言ったことを意味する楕円（the ellipse）をテーマに活動を開始する。1995年以降アジア各地を訪れ、2006年には2半年ほど日本にも滞在する。現在は、チューリッヒ（スイス）に活動の拠点を置く。これまでに、ドイツやスイスを中心に発表。個展グループ展多数開催。1997,1999年にヴィースバーデン美術館（ドイツ）で、また、2009年にプファルツガレリー美術館（同国）で個展を開催。主なパブリックコレクション：バーゼル市（スイス）、ライジンガー美術館（米国）、など。
　展覧会タイトル“Margins”は、作家によるとこちら側とあちら側の間を分ける線や内と外、或いは又、存在することと存在しないことの間に横たわる境界線をイメージしていると言う。日本で初の本格的な個展となる本展では、インスタレーションのほかに、平面や立体作品も展示予定。

スザンナ・ニーデラーの作品について：
ニーデラー自身にとって、文学、音楽、美術が身近な存在であることから、これらの接点についての考察と作品制作の模索を始める。そして、それらに共通して存在する「空白」を発見、“ellipse/エリプス/楕円”というモチーフを通じて、視覚的に表現するに至る。例えば、音楽や言葉の「間」、そして絵画作品の「空白」は、描写とともに表現として重要な役割を担うようになる。
　この「空白」や「間」は、聞く/観る/読む側に解釈の自由を与える。彼女は“ellipse”の語源である、不在・欠如・ギャップを視覚表現を通じ示唆する。ニーデラーの作品はけっして何かを強く主張することはなく、エリプスをさまざまに表現することで、存在と不在の両義性、中間にあるもの、ギャップや欠如を静寂なる空間に表し、見る者の意識を覚醒する。ニーデラーの作品は、非常にシンプルなフォルムの中に、温かさと研ぎ澄まされた美しさを併せ持っており、見る者はいつの間にか惹きつけられ、「空白」の世界へと誘われる。

Susanna Niederer
Susanna Niederer was born in 1958 in Basel. After living for a while in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, she returned to Basel to study Romance languages and art history at the university. During her student years, she also followed courses in linguistics, literature, film theory and photography in Mexico City and Paris. After completing her degree in 1983, she began working with the ellipse, dividing her time between the studio and her work as an editor for various publishers and as an assistant director for several films on contemporary art broadcast by Télévision Suisse Romande. Since 1995, Susanna Niederer has been traveling intensively in Asia and the Far East and in 2006 spent 6 months in Japan. The artist lives and works in Zürich.

Exhibition Title :  margins
With the title margins I think at the lines between here and there, the borders between inside and outside, between being and not being (which refers to the definition of the ellipse, please see below). But also the transition from red to golden colour , or from light to heavy .
It also refers to the relation between east and west not only in the sense that my “western” art is shown in Tokyo but also inside the pieces for example “Edelweiss” painted on silk, an eastern material.

In my work the presence of borders, margins is obvious. In the space of transition so many things become possible. The transitions may change, they are tried out, tested in repetition and in slightly varied types and forms.
